The
Linux
Terminal
Sever
Project is a solution for low cost desktop
computing either in graphical or text based terminals on GNU/Linux server. Using LTSP, you can take a low-end
PC, remove the hard drive, floppy and CDRom, and add a bootable network card. Many network cards have bootrom
sockets that are just waiting for a bootrom to be inserted.
During boot phase, the workstation gets its IP and kernel from the server, then mounts the root filesystem via
NFS. After the workstation is completly up, it can make use of any application on the server if it is being
used in graphical mode. It can also use multiple telnet sessions to the server. Each telnet session will
be on a different virtual screen. Alt+{F1 to F9} will switch between sessions.
